Dr Cathy SEELEY
Dr Cathy SEELEY has worked in American schools as a teacher, a school district mathematics coordinator and state mathematics director for Texas, with a lifelong commitment to helping every student become a mathematical thinker and problem solver. From 1999 to 2001 she taught in Burkina Faso and on her return served a two-year term as President of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). Before and after those experiences, Dr. SEELEY was a Senior Fellow at the Dana Center at The University of Texas. Currently, she is a sought-after speaker, writer, and consultant on mathematics teaching and learning, as well as on assessment, numeracy, and STEM.
Dr SEELEY has been recognized for her work on equity, including receiving equity awards from the Benjamin Banneker Association, the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics, and NCTM. Her recent books include Faster Isn’ t Smarter-Messages About Math, Teaching, and Learning in the 21st Century and Smarter Than We Think-More Messages About Math, Teaching, and Learning in the 21st Century, as well as two short books: Making Sense of Math and Building a Math-Positive Culture. Her article “Turning Teaching Upside Down” appeared in 2017 in Educational Leadership.
