Michael Gold is an editor in the thought leadership team at The Economist Intelligence Unit, based in Hong Kong, and the editor-in-charge of the Worldwide Educating for the Future Index programme. His main areas of focus include Asian social trends and institutions, innovation and technology. Significant projects he’s led include in-depth reports of education-related philanthropy trends in Asia-Pacific, technology uptake by companies in China and the changing concept of value in Taiwanese healthcare. He also serves as the research head for Pride & Prejudice, The Economist Group’s ongoing global initiative exploring LGBT rights in the workplace.

Michael joined The Economist Group in October 2015 from Reuters, where he was a Taipei-based correspondent covering various topics, in particular social movements, culture and the technology industry. Prior to this he was a reporter and editor for the Global Times in Beijing. He has also contributed to The Beijinger, the Los Angeles Times and The Economist.

A native of Silicon Valley, Michael received his bachelor’s degree in anthropology at Yale University before turning his career to greater China. He speaks fluent Mandarin and holds certificates in Chinese language from Beijing Language and Culture University, Middlebury College and the International Chinese Language Program at National Taiwan University.
